Representative List

Learning, Training, Professional Development

There are many forms of education, training and funding that are available to CUPE 2950 members:

Professional Development is available in some UBC departments. Each fiscal year some departments allocate funding for employees to upgrade their skills. Check with your supervisor or manager. Departments are required to provide on the job training. An employee is eligible for retraining when there has been a change in procedures, equipment, process or method of operation (See Article 19.05). If new equipment, software or upgrading of software is introduced, the department should pay for training.

Tuition Waivers are available once a member full-time or part-time has completed their probation period (see article 21.01 of our Collective Agreement). Employees who are “Temporary” (see Article 3.05) and “Sessional” (see Article 3.03) are not eligible for this benefit.  A total of 12 credits are allocated in each 12-month period (the anniversary date is the first day of class). Credits are transferable to a partner or dependent. The 12 credits can be used only for UBC undergraduate and some UBC Continuing Studies programs on or off the Point Grey campus. These credits are not accumulated into the next year.

Job Skills Training Program (JSTP) is available to members once they have completed their probation period. These funds are available for members to enhance their opportunity for promotion and transfer at UBC. A maximum of $1200 is allocated per fiscal year per member. This is non-transferable to a member’s partner or dependents. Members on the Recall List due to layoff, technological change or the Return to Work Program have access to additional funding to improve skills or learn new ones. These funds can be used for UBC and non-UBC courses both on and off campus (with the exception of UBC undergraduate programs).

Lunch & Learn Sessions are offered throughout the year. Our current series, “What are my Rights?” covers interpretation of language within our Collective Agreement as well as the processes associated with relevant articles.

Computer Training is sponsored by the JSTP. Online interactive tutorials include a range of computer programs such as the Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access); Dreamweaver; HTML; and Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Integration Series, InDesign and Acrobat. You can sign up by contacting Susanna Mulligan at 604-822-9273 or susanna.mulligan@ubc.ca

Steward and Activist Training is provided throughout the year in various areas and topics. For further information, contact our Chief Shop Steward or Union Office at office@cupe2950.ca or 604-822-1494.
