Housing prices are increasingly insane forcing people into long commutes and devastating budgets. But the underlying reason is almost never discussed: land price inflation. Land price is typically 90 per cent of home value in Vancouver. And allowing density increases has not fixed it. Understanding why land is the problem and what cities and towns can do about it is Patrick Condon’s topic, and his passion.

Patrick Condon is the James Taylor chair in Landscape and Livable Environments at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture and the founding chair of the UBC Urban Design program. He is a regular contributor to The Tyee, an independent online Canadian news magazine. Patrick Condon’s most recent book, Sick City is available for free download here.
